There
had been a settlement on the island of Golem Grad
existing from fourth century B. C., until sixth
century A. D. The remains of the settlements are
discovered in a shape of houses in the perimeter of
the church of St. Dimitrija, dating from Hellenistic
period, and tri houses dating from Roman époque and
a water reservoir in their vicinity. In the antique
époque the settlers were members of Macedonian tribe
of “Oresti”. Dating from the antique period, burial
sites are uncovered from fourth century B. C. until
first century B. C., and from fourth to seventh
century A. D.
In
the middle ages, the Island contained Monastery
complex with more churches built on it, (St. Petar,
St. Dimitrija, St. Nikola Vlaija). In the Monastery
complex there had been cemetery where church
monarchs were buried, as well as some believers from
the land who were spiritually connected to the holly
saints on the Island. The burials ceremonies lasted
until fifteenth century, and monarchs had resided on
the Island until the mid twentieth century.
