The village of Raca is 2 km away from Ohrid,
immediately above the road leading from Ohrid to St.
Naum. With the population of 1034, it is one of the
largest villages on the National Park territory.
Most of the village residents originate from
Velestovo, and have moved to Raca for the better
living conditions, and the convenience that the
proximity of Ohrid provides. There is river
Racanska flowing through the village on its way
towards the Lake of Ohrid.
In the eighties, when Ohrid with its surroundings
was visited by a large number of foreign tourists,
mostly from Holland, the residents of Raca and
Velestovo were expressing their hospitality by
arranging donkeys for riding over the mountain, and
other novelties, like offering specialties from the
local cuisine prepared in their houses.
Most
of the Raca residents have their jobs in Ohrid and
in the local tourist capacities. Some families, who
have their houses close to the main road artery,
have tourist accommodations on offer during the
summer. Other families have built completely new
premises for this purpose, or they have made
substantial adjustments to their old houses where
they live.
