The
climate in Ohrid – Prespa region, and that includes
Galicica mountain placed in between the two valleys,
is influenced by several factors to be different to
a wider surroundings. Each of these factors alone
does not generate great influence but all of them
together condition moderate continental climate.
This is accomplished by the following factors:
- Galicica
mountain is positioned in North-South direction, and
is not an obstacle to the air masses traveling along
the North – South direction, i.e. Mediterranean
influenced air reaching the slopes of the
mountain.
- Relatively
low mountain ranges in Albania and the proximity of
Adriatic and Ionian sea (110km away), allow for warm
air from the sea to penetrate the area.
- Large
quantities of water held in Lakes Ohrid and Prespa,
is acting as a heat reservoir and dampens the
otherwise large temperature differences developing
between days and nights and between summer and
winter.
- Limestone
Geological underlay makes the climate warmer and
drier.
These factors do not have influence with same
intensity to all section of the National Park. Some
areas of the Park receive greater influence,
resulting in greater moderation of the climate
conditions. As a result, there is occurrence of
plants typical for the Mediterranean in these areas
of the Park. On the other hand, high altitude
influences some of the mountain slopes to become
home for plants that are usually found in the alps.
